Introduction to KSS LEAP Teaching Programme

Welcome to the Learning Essentials for Applied Paediatrics (LEAP) programme. Designed specifically for ST1 and ST2 trainees within the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex deanery, LEAP delivers a comprehensive, curriculum-mapped educational series. Our goal is to ensure you build a robust foundation in core paediatric specialties, offering dedicated monthly teaching days that directly align with your MRCPCH exam preparation and real-world clinical practice.

What Does It Mean For Me?

Trainee

  • Be organised - book study leave in advance.
  • Aim to attend all 12 days by end of ST2.
  • Attend, engage with learning & document in your portfolio.
  • Ensure you highlight any reason for non-attendance.
  • Liaise with your ES as first port of call if struggling.

Rota Coordinator

  • Accommodate for ST1s/ST2s to be available on the 3rd Thursday of every month wherever possible.
  • Ideally should not be rostered onto shifts they have to swap to attend (except nights).
  • If facing difficulty, liaise EARLY with CT, regional teaching team, and TPD (Lola).

College Tutor

  • Identify faculty for delivery of the day.
  • Troubleshoot & work with rota coordinators and ESs to facilitate freeing up of ST1s and ST2s.
  • Highlight to Regional Teaching Team & Lola any issues or concerns about attendance.

Frequently Asked Questions

My team already deliver a regular teaching day for KSS trainees - why should I have to do another?

Thank you for already contributing to the education & training of our next generation of consultants. These days are slightly different in that they are aimed specifically at ST1s and ST2s, are curriculum-mapped to meet their specific training needs, and all the materials you need will be given to you in advance.

I don't like the topic we've been given, we have no expertise on this topic here.

The content is pitched at the level of a trainee passing their MRCPCH exams, and shouldn't require any particular expertise! The distribution has been arbitrarily decided and will pilot for 2 years - days could be reallocated differently after this. Please feedback to tell us how it could be better!

We cannot facilitate releasing our trainees for teaching.

This is how everyone felt about GPSTs and FYs too! Other specialties in KSS who accommodate FYs, GPSTs and their own specialty trainees (e.g. psychiatry) are able to make it work, and other deaneries also make it work. We understand it will be difficult especially at the start - we have aimed to pick a day that is as least disruptive as possible to all. Please reach out to us to discuss if you are struggling to accommodate.

Acceptable Absences

Please note the following acceptable reasons for not attending a LEAP session:

  • Rostered on a night shift
  • On annual leave
  • Other superseding study leave (e.g., attendance at a conference)
  • On a zero day (trainees can still attend if they wish and get the day back in lieu)
Important: You must still fill in the absence form and upload it to Kaizen.
